At least 12 individuals lost their lives and nearly seven sustained injuries after being struck by a train in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra on Wednesday. Passengers aboard the Pushpak Express, alarmed by rumors of a potential fire, exited the train and were subsequently hit by the Karnataka Express, which was traveling in the opposite direction on an adjacent track.
The Pushpak Express, en route from Lucknow to Mumbai, was approaching Jalgaon when concerns regarding a fire in one of its coaches triggered panic among the passengers.
A railway official informed the news agency PTI that sparks, likely resulting from a “hot axle” or “brake-binding,” instigated fears of a fire within the train. In reaction, passengers activated the emergency chain to halt the train. Many leaped off in an effort to escape the perceived threat, landing on the parallel track, where they were struck by the Karnataka Express.
Following the activation of the emergency chain, several passengers disembarked from one of the train’s coaches. At that moment, the Karnataka Express, traveling from Bengaluru to Delhi, collided with several individuals, as stated by Swapnil Nila, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CRPO) of Central Railway, in an interview with India Today TV.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that eight ambulances have been dispatched to the scene of the accident, and nearby hospitals are prepared to treat the injured. He also declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who perished in this tragic incident.
“This unfortunate event near Pachora in Jalgaon district, which resulted in the loss of lives, is deeply sorrowful. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the victims. My colleague, Minister Girish Mahajan, along with the Superintendent of Police, has arrived at the location, and the District Collector will be there shortly. The entire district administration is collaborating with the railway authorities to ensure immediate medical assistance for the injured,” Fadnavis stated.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has conveyed his sorrow regarding the incident, offering his condolences to the families of the victims and hoping for a swift recovery for the injured. He has instructed officials to guarantee adequate medical care for the injured individuals and to provide support to the families impacted by the tragedy.
